I pause, recalibrate, hesitate… and suddenly, I’m expending more energy trying to stay balanced than actually doing the thing I need to do to move forward.

It’s in those moments I feel the friction most.

Zooming out, I’m seeing health less as perfection across all areas of life, and more as the ability to keep multiple domains—physical, emotional, social, creative, professional—in just enough harmony to keep moving forward.

It’s nearly impossible to hold all of those in perfect balance at once! that beautifully supports this idea: lagom [3]

Lagom means “well-proportioned” or “built in balance.” I don’t think it’s a concept of perfection or fixed norms, but a personal and communal awareness of “what’s appropriate.”

Lagom is eating in a way that honors fullness over indulgence or restriction.
It’s calibrating your training intensity to your actual capacity.
It’s choosing activities that sustain you, rather than deplete you.

Instead of swinging between extremes, lagom helps establish sustainable rhythms.

(There’s even evidence that cultures valuing moderation tend to report lower stress and higher life satisfaction!) [4]

It makes sense.

The right proportions of effort, movement, and focus create durability and ease.

Rather than chasing more, lagom invites us to find value in enough.

What Momentum Feels Like

Momentum isn’t just physical. It shows up across your entire system, along a full continuum of expressions.

Physical
-Consistent training and recovery rhythms
-Not perfect workouts, but repeated ones
-A body that feels responsive, not resistant

Emotional
-Less reactivity, more range
-Faster recovery from stress
-Stability without rigidity

Creative
-Ideas connect faster than you can capture them
-Output feels natural, not forced
-You begin to trust your voice again

Energy / Nervous System
-Fewer spikes and crashes
-More steady, usable energy
-A growing sense of capability instead of overwhelm

Momentum feels like things are working with you—not against you.

Why Momentum Is Sacred

Once you have momentum, you’re no longer relying on motivation. You’re supported by movement itself. It moves you toward your preferred future. It becomes a kind of creative energy—a self-renewing fuel source for motivation, focus, and stability.

Momentum compounds quietly until it starts to grow, and then it’s loud!

“Every step you take with purpose turns a whisper to a cry.” — Jaxbe

And it can disappear just as quickly when neglected.

So you have to be intentional, accountable, and tend to your metaphoric garden a little bit each day. Over time, the growth becomes undeniable.

Practical Ways To Protect Your Momentum

Shrink non-desirable habits while you nurture new ones

E.g: Limit the # of alcoholic drinks you have per week

Use “lagom” to avoid chasing extremes

E.g: Do a 10-minute at-home workout if you can’t get to the gym

Prioritize rhythm over intensity

E.g: Take a short walk every night after dinner

Maintain a direction, even if the pace changes

E.g: Write one paragraph of your book every day

Instead of asking: “How do I find balance?”
Try asking: “What helps me stay in motion?”

Build momentum slowly. Enough that, in hindsight, I could’ve gone a little harder—if I had been more willing to check in, adjust, and respond honestly in the moment.

That experience stuck with me, because I think the goal in endurance racing isn’t just to survive the distance. (And it’s certainly not to empty the tank as fast as possible either.)

It’s to find something far more precise:

Alignment.

Not maximum effort nor restraint for the sake of preservation. But a kind of calibrated honesty between known effort and unknown capacity.

The best coaches and teachers build entire strategies around this idea.

They’re chasing a moving target:
-the exact pace at which your output matches your ability
-where nothing is wasted
-where you’re right at the edge of effort, but not forcing it

A system that is efficient, powerful, and sustainable.

A sweet spot.
Not easy—but manageable, for a while.

So, I’ve found myself coming back to this question all the time now—what is the right output here?

A Mistake Many People Make

Maybe you assume growth looks like:

more discipline

more intensity

more optimization

more output

In other words: becoming more than human.

And this is where things subtly start to erode, because the system can’t always tolerate more—faster, harder, better.

As my teacher, Sadhguru, eloquently describes it:

“The spiritual journey isn’t about becoming superhuman.
It’s about realizing that being human—fully—is already super.”

I’ve come back to this idea for years—but I’m only now fully understanding how practical it is. This applies across almost every domain:

training/exercise

nutrition

recovery/work

stress

creativity

relationships/community

The goal of growth isn’t to fully override your system or to keep adding more in pursuit of perfection. (As my mom would have described it, it’s knowing when there’s nothing left to take away.) It’s about understanding yourself well enough to work with your limits and to slowly expand them.

<a class="image-link image2 Fixed—It’s Built

The word “to build” literally comes from the root *bʰuH- (to become). It’s a process.

Your capacity isn’t a fixed trait. (Neither is your personality, preferences, or fate, by the way, those too can change!)

It evolves based on feedback, which takes time and integration. And feedback requires reflection and measurement.

I wager that most people don’t exceed their limits because their goals are too lofty or wild. They exceed them because they’re misreading signals:

Fatigue gets ignored until it becomes an injury

Hunger cues get overridden until energy crashes

Stress gets normalized until exhaustion feels normal

Or the opposite:

Discomfort is mistaken for danger, so edges are never explored.

Effort feels like overexertion, so intensity is never varied.

If growth edges are avoided entirely, we can oscillate between pushing too far or not far enough. Staying comfortable or familiar. We rarely land in the place where adaptation actually happens, which is the sweet spot of alignment.

The Missing Piece: Turning States into Traits

One of the biggest gaps I see in personal development is this:

Just because you experience something… doesn’t mean it changes you.

As Dr. Rick Hanson, author of NeuroDharma, says:

“States don’t automatically become traits.”

You can feel strong, calm, focused, or capable—and lose it minutes later.

The brain is wired with a negativity bias. It holds onto stress responses more easily and frequently than positive experiences.

So if you actually want to build capacity, you have to do something counterintuitive:

Slow Down.

Stay with the moment when things feel good, strong, or aligned.
Let it register. Let yourself feel it—so you can keep it.

Dr. Hanson teaches:

have the experience

enrich it (be curious, be present)

absorb it (stop to reflect)

reinforce it (do it again!)

That’s how resilience, patience, and strength become yours.

<a refers to the vital life force or energy within foods (origin: Sanskrit), which are typically fresh, unprocessed, and locally grown.
We call this meal our “prana bowl” because it does the heavy lifting in terms of nutrients, keeps you feeling light & energized, and it’s full of flavor, texture, and fun!

The Building Blocks of Vitality

Nutritionally, this recipe is loaded with the good stuff. Prebiotic fiber to support the good bacteria in your gut, complex carbohydrates and healthy fats to provide long-lasting energy, and a decent ratio of plant protein to replenish your muscles and satisfy your hunger. All of that checks the boxes for “healthy” eating, but did you know that equally important to the nutritional and energetic value of foods is how they look?! Food that is visually appealing and beautifully composed can dramatically influence how your body prepares to digest and metabolize those nutrients!

Eating—A Scientific and Spiritual Act

Salivation before Salvation

Imagine you’re walking into your home around dinner time and you catch a delicious aroma emanating from the kitchen. You weren’t even hungry, but in one quick moment, all your attention is diverted to finding out the source of that savory smell. You see a plate of food that immediately makes your mouth water. Your brain recognizes that stack of goodness, and says, “Whoa, that is the promise of energy, of life, of survival!”, so it starts sending digestive enzymes to your mouth in preparation to break down those delicious morsels into powerful nutrients!

Heed the Hormones

Simply the sight and smell of food can increase blood insulin levels, which is the body’s way of preparing for a rise in glucose after eating. It’s our built-in system responsible for maintaining stable blood sugar. That blissed-out state you experience after eating a hearty meal could quickly transform from heaven to hell without this self-regulating system.

Pause and Ponder
The simple (yet wildly complex) act of eating is a tremendous feat of alchemy! You’re literally transforming pieces of food from the earth into the exquisite form of a human being. The chemistry magic isn’t limited to the physical body, however. There’s a spiritual opportunity at every junction of hunger and satisfaction. Pausing to recognize this transaction as something more than a biological compulsion, that there is something bigger than ourselves, when we take in these nutrients, that is what sets our species apart and transforms this simple act into a spiritual possibility.

Basic Recipe (serves two)
Ingredients:

2 fresh figs, halved or quartered
1 moderately ripe banana, peeled and sliced
1 honeycrisp apple, chopped
1/4 cup blueberries (if using frozen, thaw and rinse before adding)
2/3 cup raw almonds (soaked overnight, skin removed)
1/4 cup sprouted mung beans
2 tbsps chia seeds
1-2 tbsp hulled hemp seeds
1 tsp ground cardamom
pinch of salt

Instructions:

Gently mix the fruit with the salt and cardamom in a medium-sized bowl. Southwestern Colorado. I had grand visions of creating a contemplative time of solitude: sunrise meditations, long hikes, journaling and cooking, stargazing, and deep sleep. Dreamy, right?

Well, my time didn’t pan out exactly as planned. But I was surprised and delighted by what did happen.

Solitude happened, but I also said yes to kind neighbors inviting me to happy hours and bluegrass shows. Meditations happened, but were interrupted by howling dogs and screeching cats. Hikes happened, but instead of climbing mountains, I ambled along gravel roads, catching my breath in the thin air. Cooking happened, but instead of extravagant recipes, I ate the same two meals every day—nutritious, but boring. And stargazing and sleep happened, though mostly after binge-watching a TV show and staying up late talking to my husband, NINE time zones away.

<a
